John Piper CH (1903–1992)

John Piper was one of the most significant British artists of the twentieth century, celebrated for his distinctive paintings, prints and designs inspired by architecture, landscape and the cultural heritage of Britain.

Born in Epsom, Surrey, in 1903, Piper studied at the Richmond School of Art and the Royal College of Art in London. Although he experimented with abstraction early in his career, he became particularly known for his expressive depictions of churches, historic buildings and landscapes. His work combines close observation with bold colour, dramatic contrasts and a deeply personal response to place.

During the Second World War, Piper served as an official war artist, recording bomb-damaged buildings and architectural landmarks. His celebrated images of Coventry Cathedral following its destruction in 1940 are among the defining works of his career. His lifelong fascination with architecture and the British landscape subsequently found expression across an unusually broad range of media, including painting, printmaking, stained glass, ceramics and textile design.

Barry Cronan Fine Art commissioned two tapestries based on Piper's work. Foliate Heads, commissioned in 1977, was produced as a hand-knotted tapestry in India in a limited edition of 18 plus artist's proofs. Long Sutton, Lincolnshire, commissioned in 1984, was also hand-knotted in India and produced in a limited edition of 25 plus artist's proofs.

Piper's richly textured imagery translates naturally into tapestry. His strong outlines, layered forms and expressive use of colour acquire an additional physical dimension through the hand-knotted surface, while the medium reflects his longstanding interest in craftsmanship, decoration and the relationship between art and architecture.

Piper received numerous honours during his career and was appointed a Companion of Honour in 1972. His work is represented in major public and private collections, and his extraordinary range across painting, printmaking and the decorative arts established him as one of the most versatile and distinctive figures in modern British art.
